How does botulinum work? Botulinum has a direct effect on the fine nerve fibres embedded in the muscles into which injections are made. Nerve impulses instruct the muscles to contract by a sequence of chemical instructions  started by the release of a bridging chemical, a neurotransmitter, which crosses a microscopic gap between the nerve and the muscle. The botulinum molecule acts to block this chemical signal so preventing the activation of the muscle within the areas of treatment.
