How does botulinum work? A proportion of the affected nerve fibres will recover from the effect of the botulinum and return to a degree of function. The effect of the treatment is usually lasts between three to four months with currently available preparations and depends on the location of treatment, the muscle volume and the concentration of injection used. As the effect ‘wears off’ the treated muscle begin to move more normally. Often the skin lines have softened during this period and are less noticeable.
