How does botulinum work? More commonly the nerve fibres reattach themselves to their target muscles by the development of new endplates across which the transmitter chemicals can stimulate the muscle fibres. Under the renewed nerve control the muscles regain their activity and the unwanted facial movements return. Subsequent treatments with botulinum do not necessarily achieve a greater effect. This re- inervation process may not be complete after several treatment cycles and may  reduce in the degree of muscle recovery.
