Management using iontophoresis, absorbant pads and aluminium containing antiperspirants may be of little benefit, whereas botulinum injections are effective, safe and often provide continuous benefit for six to twelve months. Surgery to ‘disconnect’ the nerves controlling sweating (sympathectomy) can be a major undertaking with significant complications. Laser treatments are  evidentially poorly supported, and other skin related techniques require a surgical approach. Hyperhidrosis, if untreated, may eventually result in a chronic infection in the affected areas especially the armpits and groin known as suppurative hydradenitis which sometimes require the surgical removal of the affected area. The early and repeated use of botulinum may prevent such problems.
